Doctor Who: The Night of the Doctor review

The Night of the Doctor

Cass: I wanted to see the universe. Is it always like this?
The Doctor: If you’re lucky.

Doctor Who Season: Between S33 and S34 (minisode prequel to 50th Anniversary Special).
Story Number: n/a, though minisode between 239 and 240.

Of all the nice surprises of the celebratory year of 2013, (and there have been a few), this was very much indeed the nicest so far.

Although a “minisode” it feels like an epic event – partly due to the simple fact it’s the return of the Eighth Doctor, partly due to the excellent dialogue that Moffat has crafted, (which manages to weave the idea of “not in the name of the Doctor” introduced by The Name of the Doctor), and mainly because of the winning performance from Paul McGann.

Over 7 minutes he manages to give a soulful final bow full of the dry wit we’ve known and loved over many Big Finish audios, (I say “we” but you maybe haven’t been made aware of how good some of these audio adventures can be).

Those audios provide a litany of companions’ names for him to recite.

“Charley, C’rizz, Lucie, Tamsin, Molly… Friends, companions I’ve known, I salute you. And Cass… I apologise.”

One more link in the chain of the Doctor’s regenerations has been shown, with an onscreen regeneration for the Eighth Doctor, (though regenerating to – not quite what anyone was expecting when the clamour for such a thing began in 2005).
